Summary of the Research in English
Background and Objective: COVID-19 may affect multiple organ systems, including the nervous system. This study aimed to describe the clinical presentation and natural history of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in patients with COVID-19.
Patients and Methods: This case series study included 20 patients with ICH treated at Al-Imamain Al-Kadhimain Medical City and Saad Alwitry Hospital for Neuroscience in 2021.
Results: Twelve patients (60%) were male and eight (40%) were female, with a mean age of 54.38 ± 10.51 years. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were among the most common comorbidities. Deep cerebral hemisphere hemorrhage was the most frequent radiological presentation. Most patients also showed abnormalities in inflammatory markers, including D-dimer and C-reactive protein (CRP).
Conclusion: The findings suggest an association between COVID-19 and intracerebral hemorrhage, characterized by a predominance of deep-seated hemorrhage and evidence of systemic inflammation. However, ICH cannot be attributed solely to COVID-19, as pre-existing risk factors, particularly hypertension and diabetes mellitus, may contribute to its development.
