The Duration of Symptoms in Transient Ischemic Attacks

The study investigated the duration of symptoms in transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). It included 32 patients diagnosed with TIA. The aim was to examine the relationship between symptom duration and brain imaging findings. Most patients (56.25%) experienced symptoms lasting less than 10 minutes. Patients with symptoms lasting more than one hour had a higher frequency of recent brain infarctions. Longer attacks were associated with potentially embolic cardiac conditions, particularly atrial fibrillation. MRI was more sensitive than CT in detecting brain lesions. The researchers emphasized the importance of evaluating cardiovascular risk factors. They recommended further cardiovascular investigations for patients with longer-lasting symptoms. The small sample size limits the generalizability of the findings.
